Oh man what a question. This is something I struggle with regularly.
I went from a 6:30 pace at my prime in college to my now-dubious 11:00 minute average(or so!) depending on the course and length. So how fast should I run?
Well going out too fast too soon is a classic runner's error, and one which despite my age I am frequently prone to. Actually, it's intentional now. I actually prefer running fast, so despite the fact that the race might go better if I started slower, I often start out closer to 9:00 minute mile because I'm stupid and impatient. I like it, so I suck. I guess that's a thing.
There is a bit of a science to it. Jeff Galloway's blog entry talks about this with a nifty 800-meter(2 laps) run around a track. I'll have to try this. My speed runs are not a good measurement because they are one lap at a time, but two laps? I'd definitely be in the huffing and puffing category.
How fast can you run - sustainably?
